A Mediterranean Shrub Long Linked to Fire May Also Be Shaped by Runoff

Experiments with Cistus albidus L., a western Mediterranean shrub, suggest that runoff carrying gravel and sediment may abrade hard seed coats and promote germination. These findings broaden the predominantly fire-centred understanding of Mediterranean shrub regeneration.

Cistus albidus is often understood primarily through its relationship with fire. However, water-driven abrasion may provide an additional mechanism for breaking physical seed dormancy. In a recent study, an experimental runoff simulation combining water and angular gravel resulted in 78.4% final germination—a level within the range observed following dry-heat treatment, simulated wildfire and manual scarification (Raus de Baviera et al., 2026). This finding does not diminish the ecological role of fire. Instead, it broadens the interpretive framework: heat and sediment-laden runoff may represent distinct but complementary pathways across the first threshold of plant recruitment.
