Interstitium is a scholarly publication founded by the Centro Rausenbach de Análisis e Investigación (CRAI), Spain. It provides a space for evidence-grounded scientific work that examines questions arising between established disciplines, levels of analysis and lines of interpretation.

Scientific disciplines make rigorous inquiry possible. They define objects of study, establish specialised methods and create precise forms of knowledge. Yet the phenomena they investigate do not necessarily conform to the boundaries through which science organises them. Important relationships may remain insufficiently examined because they lie between familiar categories, scales or explanatory models.

The name Interstitium refers to these intermediate spaces. In the life sciences, consequential questions frequently emerge between molecule and system, composition and function, organism and environment, plant material and medicinal preparation, exposure and response, or empirical observation and theoretical interpretation.

These spaces are not merely gaps in existing knowledge. They may reveal relations, dependencies and forms of organisation that become visible only when established findings are considered together, or familiar assumptions are examined from another level of analysis.

Interstitium therefore reads scientific knowledge both across disciplinary boundaries and between established lines of reasoning. It asks how a problem has been framed, which distinctions have structured its investigation and what may have remained conceptually or empirically underdeveloped as a result.

This may involve reconsidering what has been treated as equivalent, distinguishing processes that have been grouped, reconnecting findings studied in isolation or asking whether an apparent exception points to a limitation in the prevailing explanatory model.

The purpose is not interdisciplinarity or unconventional interpretation for its own sake. Every connection must remain accountable to the available evidence. An alternative perspective becomes scientifically meaningful when it clarifies existing findings, enables more discriminating comparisons, generates more precise propositions or transforms an overlooked relationship into an experimentally accessible question.

Interstitium is guided by the conviction that scientific originality can arise not only from discovering new objects, but also from recognising previously unseen relations between what is already known.

Founded by CRAI

Interstitium was established by the Centro Rausenbach de Análisis e Investigación as a scholarly publication devoted to biological organisation, plant science, ecology and integrative approaches to living systems.

It provides a coherent setting in which CRAI’s empirical research, conceptual development and wider scientific inquiries can be related to questions that extend beyond the boundaries of individual projects or disciplines.
